Description

This opportunity from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), led by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), invites applications for research on current topics in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRD). The Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is designed to support biomedical, social, and behavioral research, as well as research training, to advance understanding of the aging process and the diseases and challenges associated with aging populations.

The NOFO is intentionally broad, with specific high-priority research topics to be announced through subsequent Notices of Special Interest (NOSIs). Both basic and clinical research are eligible, and clinical trials are optional under this mechanism.

Funding Amount

Project Period: Maximum of 5 years.
Number of Awards: Contingent on NIH appropriations and the number of meritorious applications.
Cost Sharing: Not required.

Eligibility

Eligible organizations include:

Public/State controlled and private institutions of higher education
Nonprofits with or without 501(c)(3) status (other than institutions of higher education)
For-profit organizations (including small businesses)
State, county, city, township, and special district governments
Independent school districts
Native American tribal governments (federally recognized and other)
Public housing authorities/Indian housing authorities
Faith-based and community-based organizations
Regional organizations
U.S. territories and possessions
Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities (foreign organizations) and foreign components of U.S. organizations

Individuals: Any individual(s) with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research as a Program Director/Principal Investigator (PD/PI) may apply.

Multiple applications: Allowed, provided each is scientifically distinct.

Application Process

Submission: Applications must be submitted electronically via Grants.gov using the NIH ASSIST system, Grants.gov Workspace, or an institutional system-to-system solution.
Required Registrations: Applicant organizations must have active registrations in SAM, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov.
Application Guide: Follow the NIH SF424 (R&R) Application Guide and the specific instructions in the NOFO.
Clinical Trials: Applications may propose clinical trials but are not required to do so.
Data Management and Sharing: All applications generating scientific data must include a Data Management and Sharing Plan.
Budget: No cap, but must be well-justified. For direct costs of $500,000 or more in any year, applicants must contact a Scientific/Research Contact at least 6 weeks before submission.

Additional Information

High-Priority Topics: Specific research priorities will be announced through Notices of Special Interest (NOSIs) after this NOFO. Applicants are encouraged to monitor the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts for updates.
Clinical Research Operations Management System (CROMS): NIA-funded clinical research projects may be required to use CROMS for data management and reporting.
OutreachPro: NIA offers a free online tool for developing culturally appropriate recruitment materials for AD/ADRD clinical trials.
Review Criteria: Applications will be evaluated for significance, innovation, approach, investigator(s), and environment, as well as for human subjects protections, inclusion plans, and data sharing.
