Description

Using an interdisciplinary approach, this work will explore the state-of-the-science of cumulative impact assessment and its application at the community, state, and national levels. The work will entail public workshops, community and tribal engagement, and a broad array of consulted scientific expertise. It will build from prior National Academies reports highlighting the need to better characterize and manage cumulative exposures, health risks, and other impacts experienced in diverse populations. The organization convenes hundreds of conferences, workshops, and symposia annually, bringing together leading experts from academia, public, and private sectors. Their work focuses on providing high-quality, evidence-based consensus on complex scientific, engineering, and health-related challenges. They produce peer-reviewed reports, publish scientific journals, and serve as a trusted source of expert advice for policymaking. The National Academies mobilize approximately 6,000 top experts each year who volunteer their time and knowledge to conduct policy studies, workshops, and other activities aimed at addressing critical issues facing the nation and world.

Additional informationThe National Academies propose to assist the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by assembling an ad hoc committee that will convene state-of-the-science workshops and develop a consensus report to advise on how EPA might further develop the scientific foundation underlying the practice of cumulative impact assessment. The committee will address questions related to stressors, community vulnerabilities, integrating community and tribal data, approaches for health and well-being assessments, and adapting assessments to different scales.
