Summary: DOE sought input from universities, labs, industry, and international entities to shape future nuclear energy research and development funding opportunities.
Key Information: This is not a funding opportunity but a request for input; responses do not result in awards.
Description
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Idaho Field Office issued a Request for Information (RFI) to gather ideas, feedback, and recommendations from the research community and other stakeholders to inform the development of future work scopes for the Office of Nuclear Energy’s competitive research and development (R&D) programs. The RFI was intended to ensure that future funding opportunity announcements (FOAs) reflect the needs and innovative ideas of the broader nuclear energy research community.
This RFI was not a grant or funding opportunity, but rather a mechanism for stakeholders to influence the direction and priorities of DOE’s nuclear energy R&D portfolio, including the Nuclear Energy University Program (NEUP) and related initiatives.
Due Dates
- The RFI is now archived and not accepting new responses.
- Past deadlines for input to be considered for specific FOA development years included:
- May 13, 2016 (for 2017 FOAs)
- May 13, 2017 (for 2018 FOAs)
- May 13, 2018 (for 2019 FOAs)
- More recent RFI cycles (per updated documents) had deadlines such as April 9, 2024, and April 8, 2025, but this specific RFI is no longer active.
Funding Amount
- No direct funding is associated with this RFI.
- The RFI was intended to collect input; it did not provide awards or financial support.
- Input received could influence the structure and focus of future DOE nuclear energy research funding opportunities.
Eligibility
- Eligible respondents included:
- Public and private institutions of higher education
- National laboratories
- Nonprofit organizations (with or without 501(c)(3) status)
- For-profit organizations (including small businesses)

Application Process
- Responses were submitted electronically via NEUP.gov (account required).
- Submissions were limited to three pages (excluding cover page).
- Each idea or recommendation was to be submitted separately, clearly identifying the area of interest.
- Required cover page information included RFI title, contact details, organization, and date of submittal.
- No restrictive markings were to be used unless necessary.
Additional Information
- The RFI sought input on:
- New research areas and technical gaps relevant to DOE’s nuclear energy mission
- Recommendations for improving the structure and process of future FOAs
- Suggestions for university program engagement and partnership mechanisms
- Ways to better integrate equity and justice considerations into future solicitations
- Topics specifically not of interest: medical physics, nuclear fusion, nuclear forensics, and environmental management.
- Submission of information was voluntary and did not obligate DOE to make any awards or contracts.
- DOE may have conducted follow-up meetings for clarification but did not guarantee responses or future funding.
