Advanced modeling and simulation tools are being developed and applied to a wide range of semiconductor materials and devices, especially for the infrared. Device classes of current interest include (1) interband cascade and quantum cascade lasers for the mid-wave infrared, (2) infrared nonlinear frequency combs based on high-Q microresonators, (3) nanophotonic processes enabled by plasmon and phonon polariton modes in deeply subwavelength resonators, and (4) nanophotonic optical traps for ultracold atoms.
