In our lab, we study the quantum motion of engineered mechanical systems. By fabricating superconducting electromechanical circuits and measuring at cryogenic temperatures, we can address vibrational membrane modes using state-of-the-art microwave techniques. The strong interaction between microwave photons and mechanical motion serves as a natural test bed for the technological limitations and opportunities afforded by quantum mechanics.
