Thalassemia is a group of inherited blood disorders associated with varying degrees of anemia; severe anemia can damage organs and lead to death. To identify approaches that help individuals with thalassemia, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has requested the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine establish an ad hoc committee to conduct a study examining the latest research, best practices, and programs relevant to thalassemia.
