Funder: National Science Foundation
Due Dates: November 1–30, 2025 (conference/workshop proposals over $50,000) | Rolling (other proposals; see details)
Funding Amounts: No fixed maximum; award size and duration vary by project. Typical awards support single investigators or teams, and conference budgets over $50,000 must be submitted in November.
Summary: Supports innovative mathematics research motivated by and contributing to science and engineering, with emphasis on impact and training junior applied mathematicians.
Key Information: Conference/workshop proposals must be submitted well in advance (8–12 months); see details below.
Description
The Applied Mathematics program from the National Science Foundation (NSF) funds research in mathematics that is motivated by, and contributes to, the solution of problems in science and engineering. Proposals must demonstrate mathematical innovation and show significant breadth and quality of impact on applications. The program encourages projects that provide rigorous research training opportunities for junior applied mathematicians.
Proposals may be submitted by single investigators or interdisciplinary teams. The program also supports conferences, workshops, and similar activities, with specific submission requirements for these types of proposals.
Due Dates
- Conference/workshop proposals with budgets over $50,000:
Must be submitted during the annual November window (November 1–30, 2025).
- Other conference/workshop proposals:
- For events in the US: Submit at least 8 months before the event.
- For group travel to meetings outside the US: Submit at least 12 months before the event.
- Research proposals (single investigator or team):
Accepted at any time (no fixed deadline), but applicants should check the program page for any updates or changes.
Funding Amount
- Award size and duration: Varies by project scope and needs; no published maximum.
- Conference/workshop proposals:
- Budgets over $50,000 require submission during the November window.
- Smaller budgets may be submitted at any time, subject to advance notice requirements.
- No cost-sharing or matching required.
Eligibility
- Eligible applicants:
- Unrestricted; open to universities, colleges, non-profit organizations, for-profit organizations, and other entities.
- Principal Investigators should have expertise relevant to applied mathematics and the proposed research.
- Additional eligibility details:
- See the NSF program description and PAPPG for full requirements.
Application Process
- Submission:
- Proposals must be submitted via NSF FastLane, Research.gov, or Grants.gov.
- Required documents:
- Review process:
- Proposals are evaluated for intellectual merit and broader impacts.
- Award administration:
- Awards are subject to NSF’s standard terms and conditions, including those updated as of October 1, 2024.
Additional Information
