The U.S. economy depends on manufacturing for jobs and economic output. The performance of machine tools in manufacturing degrades over time, resulting in unplanned downtime and revenue loss. Augmented intelligence is envisioned to provide actionable intelligence for smart manufacturing. Solutions may involve on-machine sensors, metrological approaches, and machine learning to monitor and predict machine performance and optimize production. Conducted by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Fellowships Office since 1954, these programs offer a comprehensive research experience through a rigorous selection process. The programs aim to: 1) Offer promising postdoctoral and senior scientists/engineers the chance to pursue self-directed research aligned with sponsoring laboratories' goals, 2) Enhance comprehensive research efforts of participating laboratories, 3) Provide recent doctoral graduates a platform for focused research collaboration with permanent laboratory staff, and 4) Foster professional growth by providing opportunities to gain skills, experience, and connections with leading scientists, ultimately enhancing career prospects in academia, industry, or government research roles.
