Description

An ad hoc committee appointed by the National Academies will explore heritable genetic modifications of food animals. This committee will address methods for heritable genetic modifications and identify risks and health hazards to humans, animals, and the environment. Furthermore, this study will identify challenges associated with long term effects of heritable genetic modifications and identification of study design challenges when researching heritable genetic modifications in food animals. The committee will examine:

Additional InformationThe committee will prepare a report summarizing its findings about heritable genome modification techniques and identification of potential hazards to human and animal health. The report will identify knowledge gaps and recommend research areas for the near and medium term (3-10 years) that should be pursued by NIH, HHS, and other funders to fill gaps and strengthen regulatory science.
