New Voices in Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is a cohort-based leadership program that promotes collaboration among outstanding early- and mid-career scientists, engineers, and medical professionals during a two-year term of service. The program aims to expand the diversity of expertise engaged in the convening and advisory functions of the National Academies while building a network of emerging U.S. leaders to address national and global challenges. New Voices members are selected through a merit-based, open competition. Each cohort serves a two-year term before transitioning to active alumni status. Cohort members meet via Zoom each month and convene in person twice a year for a two-day meeting. They are supported by National Academies staff, with guidance from an Advisory Committee of senior experts dedicated to the New Voices mission.

They are comprised of three academies: the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the National Academy of Medicine. The organization convenes hundreds of conferences, workshops, and symposia annually, bringing together leading experts from academia, public, and private sectors. Their work focuses on providing high-quality, evidence-based consensus on complex scientific, engineering, and health-related challenges. They produce peer-reviewed reports, publish scientific journals, and serve as a trusted source of expert advice for policymaking. The National Academies mobilize approximately 6,000 top experts each year who volunteer their time and knowledge to conduct policy studies, workshops, and other activities aimed at addressing critical issues facing the nation and world.

Additional InformationThe New Voices program provides members an opportunity to think collectively beyond their institutional and geographic boundaries to identify and address issues of pressing concern for the nation.
