The Gates-Carawan Artist Award recognizes individuals for artistic potential or contributions to Appalachia in literary, visual, oral, musical, or other arts. The winner receives a physical award by a regional artist, and either a $500 stipend or mentoring in the relevant field. Nominations are due by December 1, and eligible artists must be working in the region or have ties to Appalachia.
