Description
The American Chemical Society (ACS) offers scholarships to assist former Project SEED participants as they move from high school to college, particularly those pursuing chemical-related or STEM fields. The program provides both renewable and nonrenewable awards, with selection based on academic achievement, success in the Project SEED program, financial need, and the applicant’s intended field of study. The scholarships are designed to encourage and support students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds in their pursuit of higher education and careers in science.

- Application Deadline: January 31, 2025
Funding Amount
- One-Year, Non-renewable Scholarships: Up to $5,000 for the freshman year of college (approximately 30 awarded annually).
- Renewable Scholarship – Joseph D. Loconti: $2,500–$5,000 per year for four years (one awarded annually from the pool of one-year scholarship applicants).
- Renewable Scholarship – CIBA Specialty Chemicals: $5,000 per year for three additional years (2–5 awarded to sophomores who previously received a one-year scholarship; eligible students are contacted directly).
Eligibility
Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be a former Project SEED participant (completed at least one full summer in the program).
- Be a current high school senior or college freshman.
- Plan to enroll full-time in an accredited college or university for the upcoming academic year.
- Plan to major in a chemical-related science (e.g., Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Environmental Engineering, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Forensic Chemistry) or another STEM field (e.g., Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Pre-Med, Civil/Electrical Engineering, Computer Science).
- Demonstrate financial need.
Application Process
Applicants must submit the following by January 31, 2025:
- Online Scholarship Application
- Official High School Transcript: Sent directly from the school (electronic preferred; can be emailed to projectseed@acs.org or mailed in a sealed envelope).
- Two Letters of Recommendation:
- One from a Project SEED mentor, coordinator, or supervisor (or virtual camp leader/manager).
- One from a high school STEM teacher (or a college professor if already in college).
- Letters should be emailed to projectseed@acs.org by the deadline.
No additional application is required for the renewable Joseph D. Loconti Scholarship; all one-year scholarship applicants are considered. CIBA Specialty Chemicals Scholarship applicants will be contacted directly if eligible.
Additional Information
- Scholarships are competitive and awarded based on academic achievement, demonstrated interest in chemistry/STEM, and strength of recommendations.
- Preference is given to students majoring in chemistry or closely related fields.
- Approximately 30 one-year scholarships are awarded each year.
