Due Dates: May 12, 2020 (RFI response)
Funding Amounts: Not applicable - This is a Request for Information (RFI), no funding available.
Summary: The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) seeks stakeholder feedback on draft goals and design for a future Connected Communities Funding Opportunity Announcement focused on grid-interactive efficient buildings.
Key Information: This is solely a Request for Information (RFI), not a funding opportunity; no applications are accepted. Responses were due May 12, 2020. EERE may or may not issue a FOA based on this RFI.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), through its Golden Field Office, issued a Request for Information (RFI) to gather input from a broad range of stakeholders including utilities, industry, academia, electric vehicle (EV) service providers, research laboratories, and government agencies. The purpose of this RFI was to solicit feedback on the draft goals and design of a potential future Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) titled "Connected Communities."
The Connected Communities initiative aims to advance grid-interactive efficient buildings within connected communities, addressing challenges related to integrating new loads from transportation, industry, and buildings into the electric grid. The focus is on developing innovative tools and strategies to manage these loads, improve grid resilience, and support wide-scale adoption of smart charge management and distributed energy resources (DERs).
This RFI was intended to inform the final design of the FOA by collecting insights on technical, market, and policy considerations. It is important to note that this RFI did not provide funding and was not a solicitation for applications. EERE may choose to issue a FOA in the future based on the information received, but there is no guarantee.
Note: This RFI is closed and no longer accepting responses.
No funding is associated with this RFI.
Future FOA details, including award size, number, and timing, will depend on Congressional appropriations and program decisions.
This RFI was open to a wide range of stakeholders including:
Utilities
Industry participants
Academic institutions
EV service providers
Research laboratories
Government agencies
Other interested parties involved in grid-interactive efficient buildings and connected communities
Since this is an RFI, no formal eligibility criteria for funding apply.
Responses were to be submitted electronically as Microsoft Word (.docx) attachments via email to CCPilotsRFI@ee.doe.gov.
Responses were limited to no more than 10 pages, using 12-point font and 1-inch margins.
Attachments larger than 25MB were recommended to be compressed (zipped).
Only electronic submissions were accepted; no paper or fax submissions.
Responding to this RFI does not provide any advantage or disadvantage for future FOA applications.
The RFI document and further details were available on the EERE Exchange website: https://eere-exchange.energy.gov
Questions about the RFI content or submission process were directed to the email provided in the RFI.
The RFI is part of EERE’s broader efforts to support clean energy innovation and grid modernization.
The Connected Communities FOA, if issued, would be a cross-office initiative involving multiple EERE program offices.
