This research program seeks to develop an improved understanding of the atmospheric chemistry and aerosol deposition processes which contribute to corrosion-related phenomena in the Navy. Of high interest are atmospheric chloride and sulfur-containing species which are borne from sea spray activity. Our approach combines ion chromatography, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical techniques, and modeling to predict the deposition rates onto surfaces and the resulting corrosion dependencies of materials of interest.
