The Jansky Fellowship Program for Engineers funds postdocs to develop innovative radio astronomy instrumentation and conduct self-directed research at NRAO or U.S. partner institutions.
Funder: National Radio Astronomy Observatory
Due Dates: Rolling (applications accepted at any time)
Funding Amounts: $70,500/year salary, initial 2-year appointment (renewable for a 3rd year); $17,000/year research budget; up to $3,000/year for non-NRAO hosts.
Summary: Supports postdoctoral engineers in research and development of innovative radio astronomy instrumentation at NRAO’s Central Development Laboratory or partner U.S. institutions.
Key Information: Fellows spend up to 75% of their time on self-directed research; split or non-resident appointments at U.S. universities are possible.
The Jansky Fellowship Program for Engineers, offered by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), is designed for postdoctoral engineers whose research aligns with NRAO’s mission of advancing radio astronomy through innovative instrumentation. Fellows primarily work at NRAO’s Central Development Laboratory (CDL) in Charlottesville, VA, collaborating with teams specializing in areas such as digital signal processing, low noise amplifiers, detectors, superconducting electronics, optics, RF engineering, and more.
Fellows are encouraged to pursue self-directed research (up to 75% of their time), participate in the development and delivery of cutting-edge radio astronomy instrumentation, and engage in education and outreach activities. The program enables collaboration with NRAO staff, U.S. universities, and international partners, and offers opportunities for split or non-resident appointments at U.S. universities. An annual symposium promotes interaction between fellows and NRAO staff.
