This fellowship opportunity, offered through the NRC Research Associateship Programs at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), supports postdoctoral research using neutron reflectometry (NR) to study materials, thin films, and interfaces essential to energy-related systems. NR is a non-perturbing, highly sensitive technique capable of sub-angstrom depth profiling, with particular advantages in detecting light elements and determining porosity and composition via isotopic substitution (e.g., lithium, hydrogen).
Research focuses on energy production, conversion, and storage technologies, including batteries (e.g., in-situ characterization of the Solid Electrolyte Interphase in Li-ion batteries), fuel cells, hydrogen storage materials, and fundamental studies in electrochemistry, physics, materials science, and device interfaces.
The fellowship provides access to state-of-the-art neutron reflectometry facilities at the NIST Center for Neutron Research in Gaithersburg, MD, and mentorship from leading scientists such as Dr. Joseph A. Dura.
