The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) invites applications for a postdoctoral associate position focused on applied mathematics with applications to physical oceanography. The research centers on developing sparse approximations to the inverse of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) error covariance model for the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) altimeter. This involves both analytical work on matrix approximations and extensive numerical experimentation using a regional configuration of the Navy Coastal Ocean Model (NCOM) data assimilation system to test approximation accuracy.
Candidates will engage in advanced numerical modeling and programming, requiring proficiency in Matlab, Python, Fortran, and Unix scripting. Familiarity with data assimilation algorithms is advantageous.
