    Description

This fellowship opportunity supports research focused on fundamental light-driven phenomena in nanoscale materials such as DNA nanostructures, organic macromolecules, and organic-inorganic hybrid materials. The research aims to design and characterize new materials with tailored photophysical responses for applications in photonics, artificial light harvesting, biosensing, and nanophotonics.

The research group applies structural DNA nanotechnology to organize chromophore networks on DNA scaffolds, creating supramolecular antennae that funnel photoexcitations to specific sites to trigger processes like electron transfer. Investigations employ a range of static and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques, including single molecule spectroscopy.

State-of-the-art laser facilities are available, including a regeneratively amplified titanium sapphire laser system, optical parametric amplifiers, picosecond dye lasers, time-correlated photon counting, fluorescence and broadband transient pump-probe spectrometers, and confocal microscopy for single molecule detection.

This program is hosted at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, DC, within the Electronics Science & Technology Division.
