This fellowship opportunity supports research in advanced neuromorphic computing based on a novel platform integrating superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, silicon optical waveguides, and silicon-based light emitting diodes. The platform enables each artificial neuron to connect to hundreds of others without power or latency penalties, with the potential to scale to human brain size (~10¹¹ neurons). It operates at extremely low power per synaptic event and at very high speed.
Research areas include all experimental aspects such as design, fabrication, measurement, and system modeling of superconducting optoelectronic neural networks. The work is conducted at the Physical Measurement Laboratory, Applied Physics Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Boulder, Colorado.
