    Description

This fellowship opportunity at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) supports postdoctoral research focused on advanced three-dimensional characterization and analysis of material microstructures. The research aims to explore fundamental material characteristics and structure-property relationships in Naval materials, including structural and multifunctional metals and alloys, composites, ceramics, and porous materials.

    Current research techniques include:

    • 3D data collection via serial sectioning
    • Dual-beam focused ion beam (FIB) analysis
    • Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD)
    • X-ray computed microtomography
    • Image processing and data analysis
    • Crystallographic analysis
    • Material response simulation using finite element modeling

The program emphasizes the 3D structural characterization of single and multicomponent systems, analysis of grain and interphase boundaries, and understanding their influence on material properties.
