Summary: Postdoctoral fellowship to study small-scale mixing processes affecting circulation and water mass transformation in the southwestern Japan/East Sea using field observational data.

Key Information: Open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents holding a doctoral degree; requires contacting a research adviser prior to application.

    Description

This fellowship opportunity, offered by the NRC Research Associateship Programs at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), supports postdoctoral research focused on understanding the role of small-scale mixing processes in the circulation and water mass transformation of the Japan/East Sea (JES). The research specifically targets the southwestern JES region, known for its energetic variability that influences the entire sea's circulation.

The project involves a comprehensive field observational program conducted during 2020/2021, which includes moored measurements, ship-based profiling, and autonomous observations. These in situ data will capture short- and long-term turbulent and sub-mesoscale fluxes, bottom and pressure drags, and horizontal eddy diffusivities. The collected data will be analyzed to assess mixing variability, pressure fluctuations caused by lateral variations in bottom bathymetry, and the dynamics of flow separation in the study area.

Key research themes include mixing, turbulence, fluxes, drag, flow separation, eddies, and oceanographic measurements.
