    Description

This fellowship opportunity invites postdoctoral researchers to propose and conduct basic and applied research investigating the process-structure-property relationships in multifunctional materials relevant to naval applications. The research focus areas include:

    1. Engineering ceramics and MAX phases designed for ultra-high temperature environments.
    2. Development of intelligent material systems with advanced waveform sensing and actuation capabilities, integrating experimental work with artificial neural networks.
    3. Growth of 2D materials and exploration of their enhanced electronic and mechanical properties.

Ideal candidates will have strong experience in mechanical-materials design and testing, including stress-strain analysis, tensile, bending, fatigue/fracture testing, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis, and materials characterization techniques such as SEM and microstructural analysis. Awardees will have access to expert collaborators in material synthesis and characterization, as well as state-of-the-art equipment at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC.
