    Description

This fellowship opportunity at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) focuses on advancing scientific understanding and predictive capabilities of ocean physics across a wide range of spatial scales—from global ocean circulation down to wind-driven surface waves. The research aims to deepen knowledge of fundamental physical processes including planetary rotation forces, vertical density stratification, and horizontal pressure gradients.

The program emphasizes three key areas:

    • Understanding the underlying physics governing ocean dynamics and scale interactions using realistic numerical models.
    • Interpreting diverse ocean observations from satellite and in situ instruments to reveal physical processes at different scales.
    • Integrating observational data to improve numerical ocean model forecasts through data assimilation techniques.

This research opportunity is designed to demonstrate advancements in ocean prediction by combining physics-based modeling with observational data analysis, ultimately enhancing forecasting accuracy across broad spatial scales.

Relevant research fields include oceanography, fluid dynamics, geophysical fluid dynamics, data assimilation, numerical modeling, ocean prediction, and satellite oceanography.
