Description
This program, administered by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE), funds large-scale, long-term research projects that aim to transform the frontiers of computing and information science. The goal is to enable teams to pursue ambitious, fundamental research agendas that promise to shape the future of the field and deliver disruptive innovations with broad societal and scientific impact. Projects are expected to be multidisciplinary, collaborative, and to address complex challenges that require resources and coordination beyond typical single-investigator or smaller-scale efforts.
Expeditions projects represent some of the largest single research investments by NSF CISE, with a strong emphasis on forming large teams, fostering collaboration, and integrating research, education, and knowledge transfer. The program also offers Innovation Transition (InTrans) awards to help mature and transition successful research outcomes toward industry adoption and sustained impact.
