    Infrastructure Innovation for Biological Research

Supporting novel research tools and methods for biological sciences, the Infrastructure Innovation for Biological Research Program advances Bioinformatics, Instrumentation, and Research Methods to enhance researchers' abilities in manipulating, controlling, analyzing, and measuring biological systems.

    Funder: U.S. National Science Foundation

Due Dates: October 7, 2076 (Application deadline) | Rolling (Full proposals)

Funding Amounts: $300,000–$800,000 per award; $18 million estimated program funding

Summary: Supports novel or greatly improved bioinformatics, instrumentation, and research methods that advance fundamental biological research.

Key Information: Infrastructure must have potential use beyond a single research team.

    Description

NSF’s Infrastructure Innovation for Biological Research program supports the design of novel or greatly improved tools and methods in research areas supported by its Directorate for Biological Sciences. Administered through the Division of Biological Infrastructure, the program focuses on the innovation stage of infrastructure development, rather than scaling or sustaining existing resources.

Projects may develop new infrastructure, significantly redesign existing infrastructure, or adapt it in novel ways. The goal is to improve scientists’ ability to manipulate, control, analyze, or measure biological systems and address important fundamental research questions. The three programmatic areas are Bioinformatics, Instrumentation, and Research Methods. Proposals must emphasize innovation, and high-risk, high-reward projects are welcome.
