Description
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Collaborative Research program funds groups of two or more scholars working together to advance humanistic knowledge. Supported activities include convenings, manuscript preparation for collaborative publications, creation of scholarly digital projects, and planning international collaborations. Projects must pursue significant humanities research questions and result in tangible interpretive products such as co-authored books, themed journal issues, peer-reviewed article series, born-digital publications, or open-access digital resources.
The program encourages interdisciplinary work and collaboration with scholars in the natural or social sciences, provided the project maintains a focus on humanistic content and methods. International collaboration is welcomed, with the requirement that U.S.-based scholars contribute substantially.
There are four project categories within the program:
- Planning International Collaboration
- Convening
- Manuscript Preparation
- Scholarly Digital Projects
Each category supports different project types or stages, with varying award ceilings and performance periods. Applicants must select one category per proposal.
This program is part of NEH’s Humanities Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence initiative, encouraging research on AI’s ethical, legal, and societal implications.
What’s New for 2024
- Narrative attachment page limit reduced from 11 to 10 pages.
- Additional funding stipulations for projects involving community colleges or certain Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), requiring allocation of extra funds to these institutions.
- Optional draft submissions accepted by September 18, 2024, with NEH staff reviewing one draft per project per deadline.
- Updated federal award regulations (2 CFR Part 200) effective October 1, 2024, apply to awards issued on or after that date.
