    Description

The Support for Research Excellence (SuRE) Award (R16) is a National Institutes of Health (NIH) program designed to enhance research capacity at resource-limited higher education institutions. The program funds investigator-initiated biomedical research in basic, social, clinical, behavioral, or translational science that aligns with the mission areas of the NIH. SuRE awards aim to:

    • Support faculty investigators at institutions with limited NIH Research Project Grant (RPG) funding who are not currently funded by any NIH RPG (except SuRE or SuRE-First awards).
    • Provide students with high-quality undergraduate and/or graduate research experiences.
    • Strengthen the scientific research culture and infrastructure at eligible institutions.

Projects must include significant student participation in research execution, analysis, and reporting. The program is not open to clinical trials.
