    Description

The National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean Sciences (OCE) seeks proposals from U.S. institutions to establish a Scientific Ocean Drilling Coordination Office (SODCO). This office will provide scientific leadership, coordination, and management of ocean drilling activities funded by NSF, including selection of suitable drilling and coring platforms, sub-seafloor sampling, measurements, and installation of long-term borehole observatories.

SODCO will work closely with Principal Investigators (PIs), the commercial drilling community, and other drilling organizations domestically and internationally to identify available drilling platforms and services. It will generate requests for bids, assist in planning and execution of drilling activities, and encourage innovation in drilling technologies and methods responsive to scientific community needs.

The office will also support instrumentation needs, data and sample curation, and potentially expedition staffing. SODCO will prepare and annually update a comprehensive five-year plan for scientific ocean drilling development and use, coordinating with the scientific community, NSF program managers, industry partners, and international collaborators.

SODCO's role is primarily coordination and management; financial support for specific drilling expeditions and platform leases will be provided through separate awards. The Cooperative Agreement is anticipated for up to five years, with a possible renewal for an additional five years following a mid-term management review.
