Description
This funding opportunity supports the development and implementation of mid-scale research infrastructure critical for advancing science and engineering in the United States. The program aims to fill the gap between NSF’s Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) and Major Multi-user Facilities programs, funding projects that are too large for the former but not eligible for the latter. Projects may involve new infrastructure or significant upgrades and must demonstrate a clear benefit and broad impact for the U.S. research community.
The program emphasizes strong scientific merit, technical and management planning, and the involvement of a diverse STEM workforce, including student training and broadening participation. Both "Implementation" (acquisition/construction) and "Design" (pre-implementation planning) projects are eligible, with specific budget ranges. Proposals should address community-defined needs, and projects are expected to be operational by the end of the award period (for implementation projects).
