The National Maritime Heritage Grants Program provides funding for education and preservation projects designed to preserve historic maritime resources and to increase public awareness and appreciation for the maritime heritage of the United States. This grant program is funded through the proceeds of the sale or scrapping of obsolete vessels of the National Defense Reserve Fleet. This funding opportunity is open to State Historic Preservation Offices and other organizations as described in the National Maritime Heritage Act. There are 59 State Historic Preservation Offices; one in each of the 50 states, the 5 territories, the District of Columbia, and the 3 Freely Associated States of Micronesia. One nonprofit organization, Ohio History Connection, is eligible to apply serving as the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office.:
