The Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) of the U.S. National Science Foundation offers postdoctoral fellowships to recent PhD recipients, enabling them to pursue independent research and professional development at eligible U.S. host institutions. This program is designed to foster the careers of promising early-stage investigators and broaden their research experience, professional networks, and skillsets. Fellows are expected to diversify their expertise beyond their doctoral research and are encouraged to select host institutions other than their PhD or current institution. Participation in a professional development program focused on mentoring skills is required.
Research proposals must address scientific questions within the scope of EAR's disciplinary portfolio, which spans the structure, composition, and evolution of the Earth and its systems. Proposals that integrate interdisciplinary approaches or address priority areas such as artificial intelligence are encouraged. The program aims to broaden participation in the geosciences and strongly encourages candidates to incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion activities.
