Description
This NIH opportunity (R01, Clinical Trial Optional) solicits research applications investigating the neurological and/or mental health manifestations of infection-associated chronic illnesses. Target conditions include, but are not limited to, post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (Neuro-PASC/Long COVID), myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), post-treatment Lyme disease, and other chronic illnesses with a suspected infectious trigger. Projects may focus on a single condition or explore common mechanisms across multiple illnesses.
The initiative welcomes:
- Mechanistic clinical research (including basic experimental studies in humans and mechanistic clinical trials) to accelerate understanding and treatment development.
- Preclinical studies using animal, cell culture, or human tissue models, provided the context is post-infectious etiology.
Applications must propose studies that advance mechanistic understanding of neurological and/or mental health sequelae following infection. Projects that investigate shared mechanisms across conditions are encouraged but not required.
