Summary: Supports development, validation, and evaluation of innovative mobile health (mHealth) interventions or tools for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with required U.S.-LMIC institutional partnerships.
Key Information: U.S. applicants must include LMIC researchers as key personnel; SMS-only interventions are not responsive.
This funding opportunity supports exploratory and developmental research on mobile health (mHealth) technologies specifically designed for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The program aims to catalyze innovation through multidisciplinary research, develop an evidence base for mHealth interventions to improve clinical and public health outcomes, and strengthen mHealth research capacity in LMICs. Projects must utilize new or emerging technology, platforms, systems, or analytics, and should address the unique needs and constraints of LMIC settings.
Applicants must propose partnerships between at least one U.S. institution and one LMIC institution. U.S. applicants are required to include LMIC researchers as key personnel. The program uses a phased R21/R33 mechanism: the R21 phase supports technology development and feasibility studies, while the R33 phase (contingent on milestone completion and program priorities) supports validation, larger-scale feasibility, and effectiveness studies.
