Key Information: Clinical trials are not allowed; contact NIDDK staff early to confirm project fit and eligibility.
This opportunity funds investigator-initiated, high-risk, multi-center observational studies (not clinical trials) that address diseases within the mission of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). Projects must be hypothesis-driven, involve more than one clinical center, and be fully planned at the time of application—no planning activities are permitted under this award. The intent is to support studies expected to have high clinical impact on understanding, diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of NIDDK-relevant diseases (e.g., diabetes, metabolic/endocrine disorders, digestive diseases, nutritional disorders, obesity, kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases).
Applicants who require a planning phase should first apply for the companion U34 implementation planning cooperative agreement. Direct consultation with NIDDK staff is strongly encouraged at least 12 weeks before submission to confirm project suitability.
