    Description

This opportunity from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), led by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), funds research on the development and pilot testing of behavioral and integrative treatments for substance misuse and dependence. The program is designed to support Stage I research, which includes the creation, modification, adaptation, or refinement of behavioral interventions, as well as feasibility and pilot studies. Projects may also focus on mechanisms of behavior change, treatment optimization, dose-response, and sequencing of interventions, including those that combine behavioral and pharmacological approaches.

    The scope includes interventions for:

    • Drug abuse treatment (including for patients with comorbidities)
    • Treatment and adherence interventions (including technology-enhanced approaches)
    • HIV prevention among individuals in drug abuse treatment
    • Adherence to drug abuse, HIV, and addiction medications
    • Treatment of substance misuse and chronic pain

Research may utilize innovative technologies (e.g., digital therapeutics, mobile apps, virtual reality, AI), and is encouraged to address mechanisms of action, mediators, and moderators of behavior change.

Note: This program only supports Stage I research (intervention development and pilot testing). Applications focused on alcohol use disorder as a primary outcome are not eligible.
