Description
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Coastal Program provides technical and financial support for the restoration and protection of priority coastal ecosystems. The program is community-based and works through cooperative agreements with conservation partners and landowners, including state and Tribal agencies. Projects must focus on restoring or protecting fish and wildlife habitats in coastal areas, and are developed collaboratively with Service field staff and partners. All projects must align with the missions of the Department of the Interior, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Coastal Program, and be based on sound biological principles and the best available science.
The program emphasizes:
- Conservation of at-risk species (including federally listed species, Birds of Conservation Concern, pollinators, and interjurisdictional fish)
- Habitat connectivity and reduction of fragmentation
- Building ecosystem and community resilience to climate change
- Supporting conservation on National Wildlife Refuges and other protected lands
- Engaging and benefiting Tribal communities
