Description
This program supports innovative, convergent research and education activities focused on wildland fire. The goal is to generate transformative advances in understanding, prediction, and resilience regarding wildland fire and its interactions with communities, infrastructure, and the natural environment. The program encourages multidisciplinary and multisector collaborations, including academics, educators, scientists, community members, students, industry partners, resource managers, and Tribal representatives. Proposals may address any scientific, engineering, or educational area supported by NSF, provided they are relevant to wildland fire.
The program features three main focus areas:
- Next Generation Coupled Fire Models (FIRE-MODEL): Develops predictive models and computational approaches for wildland fire and smoke dynamics, including AI/ML, data integration, and experimental methods.
- Enhancing Capacity for Fire Resilience in the Wildland-Urban Interface (FIRE-WUI): Supports research on risk management, adaptation, and resilience at the intersection of human development and wildland vegetation.
- Fire Science Innovations through Research and Education Networks (FIRE-NET): Builds collaborative networks to synthesize wildland fire science, promote new research directions, and enhance knowledge and data exchange across disciplines and sectors.
