This fellowship opportunity supports research on the electrochemical surface science of metal-electrolyte interfaces, combining theory and experiment to develop accurate models of these interfaces. Understanding these interfaces is critical for predicting reaction mechanisms and designing improved electrocatalysts, reactants, and electrolytes. Despite extensive historical research, many fundamental aspects of even single-crystal metal-electrolyte interfaces remain unknown.
The research integrates spectroscopic and structural techniques such as Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption Spectroscopy (SEIRAS) and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) with computational methods. The computational focus is on combining Density Functional Theory (DFT) for surface modeling with continuum approaches for the electrolyte environment. Projects may involve improving computational methods or applying them to specific electrochemical problems. Applicants may propose projects that include both theoretical and experimental components or focus on a single approach.
The fellowship is hosted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) within the Material Measurement Laboratory, Materials Science and Engineering Division, located in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
