This fellowship opportunity at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) supports research on the physics of intense electromagnetic fields (from optical to microwave frequencies) interacting with various nonlinear media such as plasmas, gases, liquids, and solids. The research focuses on understanding complex physical processes including nonlinear Kerr focusing, harmonic generation, stimulated Raman scattering, filamentation and self-guiding, multiphoton, tunneling, and avalanche ionization leading to plasma formation. Additionally, the energy deposited by intense laser beams can induce hydrodynamic expansion, shock waves, acoustic generation, and chemical species production.
Candidates should have expertise in experimental, theoretical, or numerical methods to investigate these phenomena. The research environment encourages close collaboration between experimentalists and theorists to advance knowledge in plasma physics, optics, high-field physics, and related areas.
