This fellowship opportunity at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) focuses on advancing numerical weather prediction (NWP) systems that extend into the thermosphere, hundreds of kilometers above the Earth's surface. NRL has developed versions of the Navy’s operational global forecasting system (NAVGEM) and the next-generation system (NEPTUNE) that reach from the surface to the thermosphere.
The research centers on improving the data assimilation (DA) component of these NWP systems. DA algorithms combine a "first guess" forecast with meteorological observations to produce the best estimate of the atmospheric state, which is critical for initializing forecasts and other applications.
