    Description

This fellowship opportunity at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) focuses on advanced research and development in ocean and ice ensemble forecasting and ensemble-based data assimilation. The research aims to improve forecasting accuracy and uncertainty characterization in coastal, regional, and global ocean and coupled ocean/ice systems.

    Key research areas include:

    • Developing ensemble generation techniques to quantify forecast uncertainty arising from errors in initial conditions, boundary conditions, model physics, atmospheric forcing, and bathymetry.
    • Creating performance measures for ensemble forecasts.
    • Applying uncertainty forecasts for end-user decision-making.
    • Developing ensemble Kalman filter and hybrid data assimilation systems.
    • Emphasis on building a global coupled ocean/ice data assimilation system using ensemble Kalman filter methods and strongly coupled data assimilation in a hybrid 3DVar framework with coupled ocean/atmosphere ensemble covariances.

Awardees will have access to NRL’s high-performance computing resources, operational global and regional data assimilation and forecast systems, and real-time global observational data from the Naval Oceanographic Office and Fleet Numerical Meteorological and Oceanographic Center.
