This fellowship opportunity through the NRC Research Associateship Programs at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) focuses on developing dynamic, controllable plasmonic pixels using electric field aligned plasmonic nanorods. The research aims to enable spatial, spectral, and temporal control of light propagation, which is critical for advancing photon-based computing systems as Moore's law ends. The plasmonic nanorod suspensions are color tunable across visible to infrared wavelengths, exhibit microsecond switching times, and can be spatially controlled via lithographically defined electrodes. The goal is to translate these properties into materials suitable for optical displays, filters, and spatial light modulators.
The research is situated at the NRL Center for Bio/Molecular Science & Engineering in Washington, DC, under the mentorship of Dr. Jacob Paul Fontana. Candidates are expected to have a strong background in optical engineering, nanotechnology, or physics, and to contribute to advancing photon-based information processing technologies.
