This fellowship opportunity is offered by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) under the NRC Research Associateship Programs. It supports postdoctoral researchers to conduct advanced research on the physical, mechanical, and acoustical properties of seafloor, estuarine, and riverine sediments. The focus is on turbulent bottom boundary layer processes caused by interactions among waves, currents, and bed roughness, particularly in shallow water environments (depths less than 50 meters).
Research approaches combine high-performance computing simulations, numerical modeling, detailed laboratory measurements, and field experiments. Applicants with expertise in time series analysis to quantify these turbulent processes are especially sought. There is flexibility for fellows to propose and carry out their own field and/or laboratory experiments using a wide range of acoustic and optical instrumentation. While experience deploying instrumentation at sea or in the lab is desirable, it is not mandatory.
Scientific investigations that explore the intersection of geotechnical and geoacoustical sedimentary processes are of particular interest to the program.
