    Description

This fellowship opportunity is offered through the NRC Research Associateship Programs at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), specifically at the National Marine Fisheries Service, Southeast Fisheries Science Center in Beaufort, NC. The program supports research on fish population dynamics, fisheries management, and ecosystem dynamics with a geographic focus on the South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico regions.

Research areas include the application of quantitative methods, laboratory experiments, and field surveys addressing population and community ecology, stock assessment, and fisheries science. A key emphasis is on integrating ecosystem factors such as eutrophication, climate change, food web dynamics, and invasive species effects into fisheries models and management advice.

Applicants may propose new research projects or join existing ones. Past and current research topics include:

    • Ecological and economic impacts of hypoxia on shrimp fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico
    • Environmental influences on menhaden recruitment
    • Population models of protogynous snapper-grouper reef fish
    • Quantitative relationships between stock productivity and life-history traits
    • Fish bioenergetics modeling
    • Effects of fishing on evolutionary processes

The fellowship provides a stipend, travel allowance, health insurance, and relocation support for awardees living more than 50 miles from the host laboratory.
