Description
This fellowship opportunity supports research to develop short-term forecast models of Pacific hake (Merluccius productus) habitat distribution along the U.S. West Coast, specifically within the California Current Ecosystem. The project involves parameterizing and validating habitat models using in situ ocean condition observations and survey data. These models will be driven by seasonal lead-time forecasts of oceanographic variables produced by J-SCOPE, enabling weekly to monthly predictions of hake distribution.
The research aims to improve methodologies for acoustic survey design, stock assessments, and fisheries management planning. This is a collaborative effort involving NOAA's Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC), the University of Washington, and the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL)/Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO). Awardees will work closely with investigators at NOAA facilities in Newport, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington.
