    Description

This fellowship opportunity at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) focuses on advanced research into x-ray sources produced by terawatt-level pulsed-power generators. The research involves studying high-voltage electron interactions with high-atomic-number targets to generate intense bremsstrahlung radiation, producing x-ray sources ranging from ten to several hundred keV with varied temporal, spatial, and spectral characteristics. Additionally, the program investigates intense soft x-ray sources created by imploding plasma loads, including linear z-pinch plasmas formed by imploding gas-puff or wire loads carrying megampere currents. These plasmas emit characteristic x-ray line radiation in the 1 to 100 keV range.

    Research interests include:

    • Millimeter-scale or smaller intense bremsstrahlung sources
    • Implosions driven by current pulses of varying duration and risetime
    • Implosions of novel loads such as capillary-discharge, single-wire, or metallic-vapor plasmas

Facilities associated with pulsed power research at NRL are available to support this work.
