Description
This fellowship opportunity at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) supports research and development in mesoscale ensemble prediction. The research addresses uncertainties inherent in atmospheric modeling, including initial conditions, lateral boundary conditions, and model physics. The goal is to improve probabilistic forecasts of high-impact weather phenomena, particularly in coastal environments.
The research uses the nested, nonhydrostatic atmospheric model within the Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS®). Key research areas include:
- Initial condition perturbations
- Lateral boundary condition perturbations
- Perturbations of model physics
- Ensemble post-processing and metrics
