This fellowship opportunity, offered through the NRC Research Associateship Programs in partnership with the Air Force Science and Technology Fellowship Program (AF STFP), targets innovative research on test, evaluation, and qualification techniques for materials subjected to extreme environments. The focus is on developing novel, reduced order, and accelerated methods to rapidly generate data that inform fabrication process iteration and material property verification and validation. Of particular interest are the phenomena of creep, fatigue, and their interaction under high-temperature and extreme conditions.
The program addresses the challenge of lengthy and costly materials testing, especially for high-temperature environments where time-dependent thermal processes complicate evaluation. By improving the speed and cost-effectiveness of testing and modeling techniques, this research aims to better align materials development cycles with digital design and fabrication innovations, including additive manufacturing and advanced materials for turbine engines and other high-performance applications.
