This fellowship opportunity at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) focuses on advancing the understanding of corrosion and corrosion protection mechanisms. The research aims to elucidate electrochemical processes occurring at oxide/solution and oxide/metal interfaces, with particular attention to the composition and behavior of oxide films.
Experimental methods include electrochemical testing with standard potentiostats, controlled temperature and relative humidity chambers, rotating ring disk electrodes, and studies of stress effects on corrosion kinetics. Surface analysis techniques such as x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and glow-discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GD-OES) are employed to characterize materials.
The program also integrates theoretical and modeling approaches, including kinetic Monte-Carlo simulations and macroscale corrosion process models, to complement experimental findings.
