    Description

This fellowship opportunity supports research at NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) focused on advancing the Warn-on-Forecast System (WoFS). The goal is to explore multi-resolution ensemble design strategies that enable real-time data assimilation and forecasting on ~1-km grids, overcoming current computational limitations of high-resolution ensemble data assimilation.

The research aims to improve severe weather prediction by integrating both high- and low-resolution ensemble members during data assimilation cycles. This approach could eventually allow for even higher-resolution analyses and forecasts (e.g., 500-m grid spacing). Successful applicants will have access to several years of warm season WoFS forecast data.

Key research topics include ensemble design, data assimilation techniques, and severe weather forecasting improvements. The program encourages innovative proposals addressing all aspects of multi-resolution data assimilation.
